As leaders of the eyecare industry, we believe that educating our patients is an integral part to providing the best care possible. One-third of the 20 million Americans who have diabetes are unaware that they have the disease. Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to an ocular complication known as diabetic retinopathy, which is the leading cause of blindess in working-class Americans with over 7.7 million people affected. We stress the importance of annual comprehensive eye exams, especially for our patients who are diabetic. We use advanced technology to monitor, manage, and treat this dangerous disease.
How does Diabetes lead to Blindness?
Insulin is a hormone that normally converts sugar in the blood into energy for cells. People with diabetes do not produce insulin properly, leading to hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). High blood sugar can cause damage to various structures including the blood vessels within the retina. It is known that 50% of patients with diabetes will develop diabetic retinopathy during their lifetime.
